1. Bankbook of Central Trust Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the name of Rabbi El (Eliezer) Silver, who served as the city's rabbi from the early 1930s until his death in 1968. Rabbi Silver's financial transactions during the years 1939-1942 are recorded, by hand, in the bankbook. During this period Rabbi Silver acted ceaselessly to rescue European Jewry and served as president of the American Rescue Committee (Vaad Hatzalah). Bankbook: 10 cm. Fair condition. Stains, minor tears and wear.
Rabbi Eliezer Silver (1882-1968), born in Lithuania, immigrated to America in 1907. Served as President of the Union of Rabbies in the USA and Canada and among the foremost orthodox rabbis leading American Jewry. Was famous for his rescue efforts during WW II. Served in many rabbinical roles in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Ohio.
2. Check for the amount of $150, given by Rabbi El (Eliezer) Silver to Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel, October 30, 1942. On the reverse appears the signature of Rabbi Heschel (and some other signatures). 21X7.5 cm. Wear, stains, punching and remnants of a rubber band.
