A long draft written by Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv for a letter of Torah-study discourse he sent to Rabbi Yekusiel Yehudah Halberstam, the Grand Rabbi of Sanz-Klausenburg. 17.7.1984.
In this letter, Rabbi Elyashiv discusses the case of a Jew who had bought a large apartment building, where most of the tenants are Gentiles and a few are non-observant Jews. The question discussed is whether the owner of the building can permit the activity of the elevator on Sabbath if its operator is the Gentile doorman, who activates the elevator for his own sake, but also for that of the Jewish tenants. If the elevator does not operate on Sabbath, the owner would suffer a great loss, since he will be unable to rent his apartments.
Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910-2012) was one of the greatest adjudicators of our generation and a leader of the hareidi public. He served for a short while as the rabbi of the city of Ramle. In 1951, he was appointed a rabbinical judge in the regional rabbinical court in Jerusalem and later was named to the supreme rabbinical court. He was a member of the extended council of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.
Grand Rabbi Yekusiel Yehudah Halberstam of Sanz-Klausenburg (1905-1994) was the first Grand Rabbi of the Sanz-Klausenburg Hassidism. He had this position from 1946 until his death. During the Holocaust, he lost his wife and eleven children, and after the Holocaust, he built a new family. He founded Kiryat Sanz in Netanya and the Laniado Hospital in the city. He lived in the USA and in Israel.
The draft was handwritten by Rabbi Elyashiv on his official stationery.
