At the beginning of the fourth volume signatures of “the young man Chaim Naftali son of the Admor Av Beit Din of the congregation of Vayirshov” appear as well as a later signature of “Chaim Ya'akov Naftali”. “Ya'akov Chaim Naftali” is imprinted upon the leather bindings of both volumes. Brief and lengthy glosses in his holy handwriting appear throughout both volumes.
The Zaddik from Warsaw, The Ga’on Rabbi Chaim Ya'akov Naftali Zilberberg (1850-1930), was among the greatest Dayanim in Warsaw. He was the disciple of one of the disciples of Rabbi Akiva Eiger, as well as a disciple of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter and the Beit Ha’Levi. He paid visits to the Admorim of his generation, Rabbi Avraham from Tshechnov and to the author of the Sfat Emet. He was the faithful assistant of the Natziv of Volozhin and the Chafetz Chaim. (When Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman would speak about Rabbi Naftali, he would be meticulous about referring to him as “The Ga’on the Zaddik”. He was actively involved in strengthening the observance of Shabbat and purity (see item 28). He edited the writings of his father and grandfather the Zayit Ra’anan from Kutna and made an effort throughout his lifetime to publish the books of Rabbi Aryeh Leib Tzuntz. See attached material related to him.
