Mishneh Torah by Maimonides. Volume one, Mada, Ahavah, Zemanim (to the end of the laws of Shvitat Asor). [Jessnitz, 1739]. (First edition with the Mishneh La-melekh on the sheet).
Hundreds of handwritten glosses (oriental writing). Most remarks mention books which clarify what Maimonides writes. (Mainly refers to the Yitzchak Yeranen, Shem Yosef, Sha’ar Ha-melekh and Kehilot Ya'akov). There are about twenty theoretical remarks. On leaf 68, he writes and signs: “and refer to the Yosher Levav… these are the words of the young Yehuda Sid”. In another remark, at the beginning of the book in the Minyan Hamitzvot, he mentions “my little book Ner Mitzvah” and in others remarks, his signature appears as “Nisa"n” [Ne’um Yehuda Sid Nero]. On the first leaf’s remark, he writes “I have asked my master…”.
The great Torah scholar, Rabbi Yehuda Sid, author of the “Ner Mitzvah” on Sefer Hamitzvot (Salonica, 1810). He was born in Dubnicza (Bulgaria). Was the outstanding disciple of Rabbi Reuven ben Ya'akov Av beit Din of Sophia. Was the Rabbi of Dubnicza and Kustendil. In 1800, he replaced his brother Rabbi Avraham as Av Beit Din and Moreh Tzedek in Philippopolis and emigrated to Safed in 1809. Passed away there in 1815. (See enclosed material).
There are a few handwritten remarks in early Ashkenazi handwriting style, most of which are print complements and text corrections.
On the first leaf there is a handwritten inscription (different handwriting, Oriental style): “Le-midrash Mahara’m Le-Veit Leon z”l” [Which refers to the Yeshiva of the important rich man Rabbi Michael Le-Veit Leon in the holy city of Safed – see enclosed material]. [8], 234 leaves. [Missing title leaf and leaf 73], 35cm. Poor condition. Moth and wear damages. Stains. Detached leaves. Rebound, damaged cloth binding.
