Announcement Concerning Baptising Jewish Children – Bohemia and Moravia, 1768
Venerabilis Nobis Dilecte. Announcement by Maria Theresa, archduchess of Austria and queen of Bohemia and Hungary.
Maria Theresa forbids unequivocally to kidnapping and baptizing Jewish children. Those who break this rule will be fined or be imprisoned for two years. In four exceptional cases baptizing Jewish children is permitted: in case the child's life is in danger; if the child was abandoned by both his parents; if one of the parents converted into Christianity or if the child is of more than seven years of age and wishes to convert.
A baptized child should be raised in a Christian environment, to ensure that he gets a Christian education. In a case of a compulsory baptism, the initiator should raise the child, and if he is unable to do so, the child will be brought up in a Christian hospital or orphanage, or by adoptive Christian parents.
This announcement was published following petitions by Bohemian and Moravian Jews concerning kidnapping and baptising children, in spite of the fact that Maria Theresa was hostile towards the Jewish communities and burdened them with heavy taxes and rules.
[10] pages, 28.5 cm. Good condition. Stains.
