Laver for Ritual Hand-Washing – From Rachel’s Tomb, Early 20th Century
Laver for ritual hand-washing. [Eretz Israel?]. Cast and engraved bronze. Laver with two handles. Inscriptions engraved in Hebrew on the sides of the vessel: “First water option, Last water duty”, and “Rachel mourns her sons”. Apparently the laver was used at the beginning of the 20th century at Rachel’s Tomb, in Bethlehem. Height: 16cm., diameter: 13 cm. Provenance: purchased from an Arab dealer in Bethlehem immediately after the Six Day War in 1967. From the inscription “Rachel mourns her sons” it seems that the laver came from Rachel’s Tomb.
