Roman Vishniac – Photograph of a "Cheder" in Poland, 1938
Black and white photo of disciples and a rabbi in a "Cheder" in Poland, by Roman Vishniac. Signed and dated on the reverse: Warsaw, 1938 (in English).
Roman Vishniac (1897-1990), a Jewish American photographer native of Russia. Best known for his photographs capturing Jewish culture in central and Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. The Joint organization financed his work as part of a fund raising drive, but Vishniac was personally attracted to the Schtetel and Jewish Ghettoes and continued to travel throughout Europe years after the Joint discontinued their financial support. During those years he was often arrested by the police and was even suspected of being a spy since he was caught photographing (in those days Jews were forbidden to take photographs or even carry a camera). In 1938 his book "A Vanished World" was published, one of the first books which documented in photographs the culture of Eastern European Jews before the Holocaust. 28X35 cm. Good condition.
