Illustrations and photos documenting the illegal immigration story of the artist Hamy Gal to Eretz Israel and his detention in the Atlit detainee camp [ca.1942].
1-26. Twenty six illustrations by Hamy Gal (colored pencils and pen on paper) portraying the voyage of the Jewish illegal immigrants on the immigrants ship "Darien II". The illustrations depict life on the immigrants' ship (beginning of the voyage, sleeping on bunk beds when sea was rough and when it was calm, visit to the ship's doctor, and more) and the Atlit detainee camp (soccer game during the day and presence check at night, showers, Passover Seder, and more). 23X16.5 cm. Most illustrations are mounted on cardboard plates (31.5X21.5 cm). Some of the illustrations are titled in pencil on the reverse of the cardboard.

Hamy Gal (1913-2005), painter, born in Romania. Arrived in 1941 on board of the ship "Darien II". The ship was detained by the British upon arrival in Haifa Port. The refugees, Gal being one of them, were detained in Mazra'a detention camp (next to Acre) and were later sent to the Atlit detainee camp. Gal was released in 1942, and in 1943 settled in Nahariya. Attached is a catalogue of Hamy Gal's Works (self-publication).
