Wall lighting fixture. Israel, 1950s.
Plexiglass, with leaves and metal wires.
The lamp consists of Plexiglass plates within which leaves and metal parts have been inserted. A linear-organic ornament is painted in gold.
Zahara Schatz (1916-1999), recipient of the Israel Prize for painting and sculpting (1955), was active in Israel and in the United States. Schatz was a highly versatile artist, engaged in abstract art and crafts.
The judging committee for the Israel Prize concluded: "Mrs. Zahara Schatz had an important contribution to general art, by introducing a new technique into the the area of abstract art integrating new materials into plastic materials. The creations of Mrs. Zahara Schatz gained a reputation worldwide and she fostered the development of a school of artists…".
One year prior to winning the Israel Prize, Schatz initiated a Triennale for applied arts in Milano and won first prize for her Plexiglass works. See following item.
General size: 33X35 cm. Good condition, paint stains on borders of lamp. Wired and working.
