"Mitzpe, monthly journal with articles dealing with Jews and Judaism yesterday and today, including illustrations and pictures. Four booklets for four months of 1885, published by Alexander Halevi Zederbaum". Zvi Hirsh Piness printing press, St. Petersburg, 1886.
A volume compiling four issues of the monthly "Mitzpe" edited by Alexander Halevi Zederbaum, Jewish author and journalist, founder of "HaMelitz" periodical.
The volume contains essays, stories and poems about Judaism, Jewish congregations and Eretz Israel, by some of the outstanding figures of the Haskala period, incuding Yehiel Michal Pines, Zvi HaCohen Shershevsky, Yehudah Leib Levin, Avraham Eliyahu Harkavy, Shneur Sachs, Naftali Herz Weisel, and others. Accompanied by several picture-plates: portraits of Moshe Montefiore, Dr. Eliezer Halevi, Baruch Spinoza, and others; illustrations of Eretz Israel sights (Jerusalem, Jaffa, Safed); Moses Montefiore's estate; and more.
It seems that Zederbaum did not manage to print each one of the four issues separately, and the content was compiled and re-arranged in the volume presented here (essays that originally appeared as a series in several issues, are arranged consecutively).Irregular pagination. Volume: 24 cm. Good condition. Stains. Several detached leaves. Loose binding, damaged. Ex-library copy. Ex-Libris label.
