Eliezer Ludwik Zamenhof (1859-1917), ophthalmologist and amateur linguist, inventor of the international language Esperanto. Zamenhof started to work on creating an international language when he was still a gymnasium student in Warsaw. In 1887, after more than ten years of work, he completed the project. Zamenhof considered Esperanto as a means of communication and distribution of the ideal of co-existence among different communities and cultures. To establish the possibility of using Esperanto as a literary language Zamenhof translated numerous literary creations from international literature (including the complete bible) and composed poetry.
