Prescription for eyeglasses, handwritten and hand-signed by Eliezer Ludwik Zamenhof. Warsaw, 1907. Polish. Written on stationery of Zamenhof's clinic in Warsaw.
Eliezer Ludwik Zamenhof (1859-1917), ophthalmologist and amateur linguist, inventor of the international language Esperanto. Zamenhof started to work on creating an international language when he was still a gymnasium student in Warsaw. In 1887, after more than ten years of work, he completed the project. Zamenhof considered Esperanto as a means of communication and distribution of the ideal of co-existence among different communities and cultures. To establish the possibility of using Esperanto as a literary language Zamenhof translated numerous literary creations from international literature (including the complete bible) and composed poetry. Leaf 15.5 cm. Fair condition. Folding marks, creases, stains and tears. Pasted on Bristol. Remnants of an ownership ink-stamp.
