"Yehuda" a fabric appliqué created by the artist Kopel Gurwin. Israel, [ca. 1960].
Felt appliqué. Signed: "Kopel" (embroidery, Hebrew).
In the center is Gur Aryeh Yehudah (lion) with his tongue sticking out, surrounded by branches, leaves and dots. A similar lion appears on the poster designed by Gurwin for the 25th Independence day of the State of Israel.
The artist Kopel Gurwin (1923-1990) was born in Vilnius and had a Hebrew education. He endured the Holocaust years in concentration camps. After World War II, he moved to Sweden and lived there until 1950, thereafter he relocated to Israel and began studying art in the Bezalel Academy. Concluded his studies in 1957; was renowned as a tapestry artist and graphic designer. His works were exhibited in the Israel Museum and in various galleries in Israel and abroad.
