Anti-Semitic Medal - Conquest of the City of Buda by the Austrians, 1686
Anti-Semitic medal struck following the conquest of Buda by the Austrians. [Austria, 1686].
In 1686 the Austrians conquered Buda (today part of Budapest) from the Ottoman Empire. This medal was struck to commemorate the Austrian conquest, and it derides the Turks and the Jews (who supported Ottoman rule and its defense of the city), portraying them as war profiteers.
Obverse: a Jew and a Turk next to a furnace (for melting metal), with the Turk holding tongs and the Jew holding bellows. Surrounding them is the legend "Wer Distillirt Nun Geld Zum Fried Weil Turck Und Iud Des Krieges Mud" [German - "Who mints money for peace, now that the Jew and Turk are tired of war?"]. Reverse: German legend meaning "Ofen [Buda] belongs to Leopold. Luck has been against Mohammed. He loses the city of Ofen with all its gold, which was destined to be used for the purchase of peace". On the edge is an additional German legend.
Diameter: 41 mm. Defect near the edge.
