Inauguration of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam - Etching - Amsterdam, 1675
Inauguration of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam, etching by Romeyn de Hooghe. [Amsterdam, 1675].
A detailed etching depicting the inauguration of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam. Seen in the center are members of the Jewish congregation during prayer (in the foreground, among the congregation members, are women and children). On the upper part, in the center - allegoric scene about granting Jews freedom of religion; on the upper right corner - view of the Synagogue building, on the upper left corner - plan of the synagogue's interior. On the margins of the etching, in six medallions, appear the names of donors to the construction of the synagogue.
The Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam was inaugurated in August 1675, with a festive prayer. This etching was consigned from the Dutch artist Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) as a souvenir from this event.
Etching: approx. 49.5X39 cm, leaf: 56X44.5 cm. Good condition. Folding marks and creases. Some stains. A small tear at upper margins of leaf.
