Consecration Service, Synagogue of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation Shearith Israel, in the City of New York, Central Park West and Seventieth Street, Iyar 18, 5657-May 19, 1897. New York: [ca. 1897], Hebrew and English on facing pages.
An image of the new synagogue appears on the first page, and various officials in charge of the synagogue's management are listed on the tuitle page. They include Rabbi Dr. H. Pereira Mendes and Cantor Abraham H. Nieto. The Order of Service, Lighting of the Perpetual Lamp, and Circuits appear on the following pages.
Congregation Shearith Israel is the oldest Jewish community in the United States. It was founded in 1654 by several Jews who had been expelled from Spain and Portugal and arrived in New York. Until the building on West 70th Street was constructed – where the synagogue remains to this day - the community moved between five different places (which are listed on the front cover of the booklet).
15 pp., 28.5X 22 cm. Good-fair condition. All the leaves have been restored at their margins with acid-free paper and are bound in booklet form.
