Album of Photographs from Palestine – 1920s – Photographs of Pioneers, Workers and Kindergartens
Approx. 60 photographs arranged in an album, prepared as a souvenir for Malka Teblinsky, a kindergarten teacher from Bialystok who immigrated to Palestine in the 1920s. Tel-Aviv, Tel-Hai, Acre and other locations in Palestine and Europe, ca. 1920s.
The album includes numerous photographs of Teblinsky with kindergarten children (during Hanukkah, during a visit to a dairy in Tel-Aviv, working in a garden and more); numerous photographs of workers and pioneers (preparing cement blocks, paving roads, building barracks and buildings, and more); and photographs of views in Palestine (group visit to the Roaring Lion memorial in Tel-Hai, bicycle ride in the fields, photographs from the beach, and more). The album also includes about twenty photographs from the period prior to her immigration to Palestine, documenting her life and work as a kindergarten teacher in Europe.
On the first page appears a handwritten dedication (in Yiddish, partially deleted) to Teblinsky from her cousin, Hannah.
Most photographs are divided on the back for use as a postcard. Four photographs are stamped by the photographers: "Z. Brill"; "Zalmania D. Pozen"; and A. Tikotskj". A number of photographs are titled and dated by hand (on the margins and on the back) or in the plate (in Hebrew).
Size and condition vary. Average size: approx. 14X9 cm. Good-fair overall condition. Stains and blemished (mostly slight). A number of photographs are mounted on album's leaves or attached with adhesive tape. One photograph is missing a corner.
Album size: approx. 35.5 cm. Fair condition. Stains, creases and small tears (at margins and at the openings for insertion of photographs, some restored with adhesive tape). Some worming. Decorated binding, rubbed, with tears and defects.
