Two Maps of Jerusalem – The Netherlands, 17th and 18th Centuries
Two imaginary maps of Jerusalem. The Netherlands, 17th and 18th centuries.
1. De Heylige en Wytvermaerde Stadt Ierusalem Eerst Genaemt Salem. Bird's eye view map of Jerusalem, engraving by Iacob Savry, [after a map by Visscher from 1643]. [Amsterdam], 1648. Dutch.
Jerusalem in the days of the second Temple with the Temple in the center, and Herod's palace in the north. On the bottom right corner appears an image of Solomon's coronation.
The map was printed in the Lutheran Bible published by Rieuwert Dircksz van Baardt in Amsterdam, 1648.
Laor 1121.
49.5X32.5 cm. Fair-poor condition. Dark paper. Stains. Tears at margins. Open tears, affecting the map, restored with pasted paper. Strip of paper on the back of the map, along the vertical fold line. A strip on the right side of the map is almost entirely detached.
2. De Stadt Ierusalem, map of Jerusalem from bird's eye view, engraving [second state of the Danckerts map]. Published by R. & J. Wetstein and William Smith, Amsterdam; Samuel Luchtmans, Leiden, [ca.1730]. Dutch.
The map depicts Jerusalem in the days of the temple with the temple vessels around it. On the bottom appear the façade of Solomon's temple as a European palace and a panorama of Jerusalem. This is a second state of the map, first published by Cornelis Danckerts.
