A History of the Old and New Testament – Amsterdam, 1700 – Engravings and Maps
Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament, enrichie de plus de quatre cens figures en taille-douce [History of the Old and New Testament, with more than four hundred illustrations], by Martin David. Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1700. Two parts in one volume.
A History of the Old and New Testament, with 214 engraved plates (on most of them appear two separate images that depict Biblical scenes), five maps (a map of the world and maps of Palestine and its environs – double plates), and two title-page engravings.
The text and the foreword at the beginning of the book were written by David Martin, a French Protestant theologian. Since the book was published by the Dutch cartographer and engraver Pieter Mortier (1661-1711), it is often referred to as "Mortier's Bible."
[20], 282, [8]; [20], 154, 20 pp. + plates, approx. 41 cm. Leather binding. Good condition. Large dampstain on the first leaves of the book and a few stains on the subsequent leaves. A small number of tears. Minor worming. Some pages and plates are bound upside down. The binding is reinforced with paper strips on the inside (along the seam between covers and endpapers). Restored tears in the endpapers. Damaged binding, with restoration.
