Underground Jerusalem, an account of some of the principal difficulties encountered in its exploration and the results obtained, by Charles Warren. London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1876. English.
"Underground Jerusalem", by Charles Warren, an officer in the British Royal Engineers. Warren was sent to Palestine in 1867 by the British Palestine Exploration Fund and was one of the pioneers of archeology in the Holy Land, particularly in Jerusalem. The book contains ten plates – three photographs (the Western Wall, a group of Ashkenazi Jews and Samaritans praying on Mount Gerizim); plan of the Temple Mount depicting the research results by Charles Wilson and Charles Warren (folding plate); a map of the Jordan Valley; drawings of Wilson's Arch and Robinson's Arch; and more. Additional sketches and illustrations are incorporated in the text.
XVII, [2], 559 pp. + [10] plates, 21.5 cm. Good condition. Minor blemishes to margins of leaves. First leaf (photograph of the Western Wall) slightly detached. Fine binding, with gilt embossings (illustrations on front binding). Some blemishes and tears to binding.
