126 hand-colored botanical engravings from the periodical "The Botanical Magazine; or Flower – Garden Displayed / Curtis's Botanical Magazine", founded by William Curtis. Published by Samuel Curtis, William Curtis and Thomas Curtis. London, 1787-1817.
"Curtis's Botanical Magazine" featured fine hand-colored engravings depicting, with scientific precision, various plants, including plants to be grown in an English garden, alongside short captions – the name, scientific classification and description of each plant. Most engravings in this collection are accompanied by the scientific description printed in the periodical.
In the collection:
* 63 engravings published by William Curtis, 1787-1802. Some signed in the plate by the artists: S. Edwards, F. Sansom, J. Soweby, and some are not signed.
* 3 engravings published by Thomas Curtis, 1802-1803. Signed in the plate by the artists Syd. Edwards and F. Sansom.
* 60 engravings published by Samuel Curtis, 1811-1817. Some are signed in the plate by the engraver [E.S. Weddell].
Enclosed is a print from the periodical "Florist's Journal", 1846.
Leaves: Approx. 23X14 cm. Three leaves: 29.5X23 cm. Good overall condition. Tears and open tears to margins of leaves. A number of leaves have scorched margins. Stains. Creases. Several leaves of the first volumes are still bound together. Pieces of paper which were used for attaching leaves to a board for framing are attached to a number of leaves.
