First edition of the book "Rules for the Five Orders of Architecture" by the Italian architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola was published in Rome in 1562. The book, endeavoring to train architects who wished to build in the classic architectural spirits, became one of the most important architecture books of the period and was printed in numerous editions.
The book contains 42 engravings depicting the orders of classic architecture.
Frontispiece engraving is a reduced copy of the title page printed in the first edition of this book.
71 pp, [42] engravings (40 of them are numbered in Roman numerals; most of them are included in pagination). 31.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Slight tears at margins of a number of leaves. Stains, among them ink stains and dampstains, along the book (some are dark; some are on the engravings). Pen signature on first page (blank). Pen inscriptions to one of the engravings. Vellum spine and corners. Tears and damage to binding. Pen inscriptions to inner side of back binding.
