Photographs and Documents – Member of HaShomer HaTzair in Austria and in England / Person who Fell during the War of Independence While Defending Kibbutz HaMa'apil / Condolence Letter on Vellum Signed by David Ben Gurion
Collection of items of Ya'akov Landheim (1921-1948), born in Vienna, Austria, member of the Netzach youth group and HaShomer HaTzair in Austria. Landheim was wounded on Kristallnacht and immigrated to England shortly before the outbreak of WWII. He immigrated to Palesine in 1945 together with 20 friends from hachshara, spent half a year in Mishmar HaEmek, finally joining Kibbutz HaMa'apil. He served during the War of Independence, and died in an attack on Kibbutz HaMa'apil in March 1948. His grave was the first to be dug on the Kibbutz land.
The collection contains: * Photo album with about 80 photos of Landheim and his family (a few photos document the youth group in Austria, the Shomer HaTza'ir members in England and a number of photos from Palestine). * About 30 family letters (most sent to Landheim from his mother, sister and aunt), with several letters by Landheim to his mother and aunt. * Condolence letter on Landheim's death, written on vellum and signed by David Ben Gurion.
Size and condition vary. Overall good condition.
