Poetry Book by Jacob Israel De Haan – Dedication in his Handwriting to Norman Bentwich – Jerusalem, 1921
Het Joodsche Lied, Tweede Boek [the Jewish Song, Second Book], by Jacob Israel De Haan. Amsterdam: Maatschappij voor Goede en Goedkoope Lectuur, 1921. Dutch.
On the front endpaper appears a dedication handwritten by De Haan (German): Norman Bentwich, von dem Dichter, Jerusalem [Norman Bentwich, from the poet, Jerusalem]. 23.6.21
Jacob Israel De Haan (1881-1924), Jewish attorney, journalist and poet, born in the Netherlands. In 1919 he immigrated to Palestine with the hope of joining the Zionist Movement. After being rejected by the circles and institutions he wished to enter, he joined the ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) circles in Jerusalem and began acting against the Zionist community. Among other things, he organized a Haredi delegation to Emir Abdullah, King of Jordan. De Haan was assassinated in what is considered the first political murder in Palestine.
Norman Nachman Matityahu Bentwich (1883-1971), jurist, Zionist activist and officer in the British Army during World War I, was sent to the Palestine front, and in 1920 was appointed as legal advisor to the Mandate Government. His activity in favor of the Jewish Yishuv aroused opposition among Palestine Arabs which reached its peak when in 1929 there was an attempt to assassinate him.
160 pp, approx. 18 cm. Good condition. Stains and slight damage to margins. Slightly worn cloth binding, with faded spine and margins.
