Four Paper Items – Detention Camp in Cyprus – 1948
Two letters and two documents which belonged to the Zionist activist Willy Fux, while he was detained in camp no. 69 in Cyprus. Cyprus, 1948. Romanian and Hebrew.
Detention Camp no. 69 opened at the end of 1947 when detention camps in Cyprus became overcrowded. Among others, illegal immigrants from the ships "Geula" and "Medinat HaYehudim" as well as members from "Kibutz Zikim" immigration group in Romania were detained there. The items presented here belonged to Willie Fux, a member in the immigration group which was caught on its way to Palestine.
The collection includes:
1. "Delegate card to Winter Camps Commission", printed and filled in by hand, on behalf of the "Temporary Management in the Winter Camps", on 15.9.1948. Stamped with two ink-stamps of the management, one on the front and one on the back (different stamps).
2. Small note which served as an 'official form' for the camp management: lined paper (blank), stamped on top and on bottom margins with two ink stamps of "Secretariat of Camp 69" (different stamps).
3. Letter dated 7.10.1948 from a person named Shlomo Obalovitch from Botoshani (Romanian). The letter was sent to a woman named Esther Markovich in Tel-Aviv, who sent it to Willie Fux in Detention camp no. 69 in Cyprus. On top margins of the first page appears in Hebrew: "Long Live the State of Israel and its Defenders".
4. Letter dated 10.10.1948, from a person named Arie Bines from Botoshani (Romanian). Sent to Willie Fux in Detention Camp no. 69 in Cyprus.
Original envelopes of both letters are enclosed. It is possible that the writers were also members in the same "Kibutz Zikim" group in Romania.
Enclosed: four notebooks issued upon Fux's arrival in Israel: Member card of "HaHistadrut HaKlalit Shel HaOvdim HaIvrim BeEretz Israel"; Identity Card; Officer Card – Civil Defense [Defense against tanks and air-raids]; Temporary exemption certificate from IDF (for Shulamit Fux).
Size and condition vary. Overall good condition.
