De Synagoga Vetere, by Campegius Vitringa. Franeker (Netherlands): Johannis Gyzelaar, 1696. Latin, with Hebrew and Greek. Two parts in one volume.
A dissertation by the theologian and Hebraist Campegius Vitringa (1659-1722) in which he shows that the Christian Church rests historically on the Jewish synagogue.
An engraved plate by Joseph Mulder appears opposite the title pages of both parts of the composition depicting various peoples at the entrance to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. At the top of the engraving is a referral to a verse from the Book of Zechariah. The printer's mark with the Tetragrammaton appears on the title pages.
A bookplate of the German theologist Johann Christoph Bodenschatz (1717-1797) appears on the verso of the first title page below a handwritten Greek inscription.
[1] leaf (engraving), [30], 608 pages (mispagination); [1] leaf (engraving), [7], 610-1138, [38] leaves, 20 cm. Good condition. Stains and creases. Closed and open tears to margins of several leaves. Worming to inner margins of the first engraved plate (not affecting illustration). Elegant vellum binding, with gilt inscription.
