A dog tag and three booklets which belonged to Yaaqov Avni, a Jewish soldier in the Corps of Royal Engineers during World War II. Palestine and Israel, [ca. 1940s].
1. British Army dog tag: two tags threaded on a thick string, one round and the other octagonal, in two colors. An identical inscription appears on each one of them – the regiment, identity number, religion and name of soldier: Pal[estine] 46484, Y, Avni [the letter "Y" stands for "no religious preference"].
2-4. Three notebooks, printed, completed by hand and ink-stamped, issued in the name of Avni:
* Discharge Book, Locally Enlisted Troops. Discharge book from the British Army, with details of Avni's unit. Issued in 1946. * Identity Card issued by the British Mandate Government, with his photograph, personal details and his signature by hand (date of issue is ink-stamped, deleted and illegible). * Certificate "HaMityazev LeSherut HaAm" (enlistment certificate) in the name of Avni on behalf of "Merkaz HaMifkad LeSherut HaAm" with Avni's photograph and ink-stamped stamps. Issued on 7.7.1948.
Size and condition vary. Good-fair overall condition. Stains and damage. Discharge booklet with a horizontal folding line, tears at margins and tears along folding line.
