Ze'ev Raban, six original drawings – sketches of illustrations for the Book of Job. [Early 1940s].
Ink, pencil, watercolor and gouache on paper. Stamped "Ze'ev Raban, Industrial Art Workshop (formerly Gur Aryeh & Raban), Bezalel Jerusalem". Pen and pencil drawings appear in the margins of some of the sketches.
In 1942, Raban created a series of illustrations for the Book of Job for a British officer who lost his son. The Book was written on parchment and bound in silver, the binding having been designed by Raban as well. In 1967, a printed edition of the Book of Job with Raban's illustrations was published (by Sinai Publishing Co.).
1-2. Job in prayer, two colorful sketches.
* Drawing on paper: Leaf - 17.5X20.5 cm. Good condition. Creases and light stains. * Drawing on parchment paper: leaf - 8X10.5 cm. Fair condition. Minor damage. Adhesive tape strips on verso (along the entire length of the leaf).
3. Colored sketch for the illustration of the verse "So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite [and] Zophar the Naamathite went…".
Leaf: 35X40 cm. Good condition. Folding marks and creases. Stains. Tears, some open, to margins. Two strips of adhesive tape on verso, near the upper margins.
4. Colored sketch for illustrating the verse "… and Satan came also among them".
Leaf: 29X31 cm. Good condition. Folding marks and creases. Discoloration. Tear to upper right corner, not affecting the sketch.
5. Colored sketch illustrating the verse "Behold now behemoth, which I made with you; eats grass as cattle".
Leaf: 31X34 cm. Good condition. Stains and creases. A strip of paper is pasted in the upper left corner and adhesive tape traces on verso.
6. "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away blessed be the name of the Lord, Job Chap. I Verse 21" – pencil sketch of the verse which appeared on the silver binding of the Book of Job.
Leaf: 9.5X17 cm. Good condition. Folding marks and creases. Stains. Small open tears to margins.
Each drawing is in a passe-partout (attached at the upper margins. One drawing is detached from the passe-partout).
