Collection of Documents – Post-Holocaust Jewish Communities in Krakow and Katowice

Four letters and documents issued by the Jewish communities in Krakow and in Katowice (Poland) – letters of recommendation and authorizations given to a rabbi from Krakow, and other documents. Krakow and Katowice, 1948-1949.
1. Letter by R. Moshe Ya'akov Lewertow, "Rabbi of Krakow and the region". Krakow, [second half of the 1940s].
Authorization that R. Avraham Wasserberg was ordained as a posek: "I hereby attest that the prominent Rabbi… Avraham Aryeh Wasserberg… had been ordained before the war by several leading rabbi of our times… However, during the travails of the recent war, while confined in various camps, he lost the writs of ordination (semicha). Therefore, I hereby attest that I have seen these ordinations… and I too ordain him…" (Hebrew).
The letter bears the handwritten signature and stamp of R. Moshe Ya'akov Lewertow.
2-3. Two letters on the official stationery of the "Holy Krakow Community" (Zydowska Kongregacja Wyznaniowa w Krakowie). Krakow, 1948-1949.
* Letter from 1948 (typewritten in Polish) regarding the work of R. Avraham Wasserberg in Krakow. Bearing his signature and ink stamps.
* Handwritten letter from the 1st of Shevat 1949, affirming that after WWII, R. Avraham Wasserberg worked as "a mashgiach and public religious supervisor" in the institutes of the Krakow Jewish community and recommending "to give him the responsibility of the management of public institutes". Signed by Ya'akov Sternberg ("on behalf of the community leadership") and stamped "Zydowska Kongregacja Wyznaniowa w Krakowie".
4. Official authorization on behalf of the Jewish community of Katowice (Poland), regarding the employment of Chaskiel Rebhun in the community institutes. Katowice, 1949. Polish.

Size and condition vary. Folding marks, creases, stains and tears.
Enclosed: Swiadectwo slubu, a Polish marriage certificate from 1936 (printed and filled in by hand).
