The Book of Eicha and the Book of Kohelet. Printed in 1938, on behalf of the Board of the Jewish Community of Berlin. These two books were printed in the year when the Kristallnacht occurred and are among the last Hebrew books printed in Germany prior to the holocaust.
1. Migillath Echa. Published by Vorstand Der Jüdischen Gemeinde Zu Berlin, Berlin, 1938. Hebrew and German.
Facsimile of Megillat Echa, Antwerp edition (1566), followed by a German translation of Megillat Echa by Dr. Ludwig Philipsohn. Two title pages – Hebrew title page (copy of the original title page with the words "Echa" and "Antwerp") and a German title page. Following the German title page appears an illustration by the painter Eduard Bendemann – " Jeremiah on the Ruins of Jerusalem".
32 pp, [11] leaves, 11 cm. Good condition. Slight stains. Creases, tears and open tears to cover.
2. Megillath Kohelet - Die Rolle Kohelet. Published by Vorstand Der Jüdischen Gemeinde Zu Berlin, Berlin, 1938. Hebrew and German.
The book was printed for the holiday of Succoth 1938. The text and the translation appear page facing page and some of the verses in the German translation were printed in red ink. The book is accompanied by illustrations and decoration by E.M. Lilien. On the cover appears the figure of King Solomon by Lilien.
The foreword focuses on the encouragement which this book renders to the sorrowful and suffering (implying the condition of Jews under Nazi regime).
