Extensive Collection of Checks, Letters and Documents – "Klinger Bank" in Safed – 1920s-40s
About 450 checks, letters, forms, account books and other paper items, documenting the activity of the "Klinger Bank" in Safed. Safed, Tel-Aviv, Haifa, Tiberias and other places in Palestine, 1920s-40s. Hebrew and English.
The "Klinger Bank" was the second Jewish bank in Palestine. It was founded early in the 20th century by Yoel Barshad, Zvi Barzel and Eliyahu Klinger, and was one of the most important banks at the time. Among others, the bank granted loans to institutes and personalities of the Old Yishuv, issued bills when trade was prohibited during World War I, supported small banks and even survived a fire during the 1929 Riots. Late in the 1960s the bank was sold to "Bank Leumi".
This collection includes, among others:
* About 100 bank checks, printed, filled in by hand and signed with ink-stamps, issued by various banks in Palestine: "Barclays Bank", "Palestine Mercantile Bank Ltd.", "Ottoman Bank", "Palestine Kupat Am Bank", checks of "Klinger Bank" and more.
* About 350 documents, accounts, letters and forms for bank transfers, documenting the bank activities and its relations with other banks.
* Nine accounting and stock books of "The Petroleum Company (Egypt)" managed by Eliyahu Klinger, company's agent. The books contain dozens of entries (carbon-copy, from the years 1921-1925).
Size and condition vary. Good overall condition.
