Withdrawn. Archive containing about 125 illustrations and sketches for children's books, by Uriel Kahana, and four manuscripts of stories for children. [Poland, Italy and Palestine, second half of the 1920s to ca. 1930].
Among the items in the archive:
* Illustrations and sketches for stories titled "Ani Dachlil", "Hechalutz Hakatan", "Haikar Hakatan", "Hazipor", and more, published in the book "Gilyonot, Sipurim veShirim LeYalde HaGan" edited by Levine Kipnis and by the literary council of "Yad Merkaz HaGananot" (published by the Association of Kindergarten Teachers in Palestine, Tel-Aviv, 1929).
* Numerous illustrations of squirrels and rabbits, meant, apparently, to accompany the tale "Shtayim veShtayim Harei ze Arba" (hereafter).
* Many illustrations of bears. It is possible that they were meant for the Hebrew version (never published) of the book "Der Ber" by Ben-Zion Raskin with illustrations by Lissitzky (published by "Yiddisher Folks-Farlag", Kiev, St. Petersburg, 1919, (as part of the series of books "Kindergarten").
* Sketch for a cover for a booklet titled "Hayo Haya", signed in initials and dated 1930 (probably a sketch for a booklet with stories by Levine Kipnis).
* Sketch for a cover for the booklet "BaMishpacha" from the series "Megilot LeBeit HaSefer" (BaMishpacha" booklets, nos. 111-112 of this series, were published by "Omanut" in Tel-Aviv in 1929).
* Unidentified sketches, titled in Yiddish: "Dergr hot ber", "Dos gorten Ha'aretz".
* Two manuscript drafts - one in Yiddish and one in Hebrew - for a children's story titled "Tsvay-tsvaymol iz fir" (or: "fir tayln of tsvay iz tsvay"), in Hebrew - Shtayim ve Shtayim Haray Arba" (or: "Shtayim vePa'amayim haray ze Arba"). 3 leaves; 4 leaves. Numerous corrections on the manuscript.
* Two handwritten drafts - one in Yiddish and one in Hebrew - for a children's story titled "A par taybelakh" and in Hebrew - "Zug Yonim" (a pair of pegions). [2] pp, [2] pp.
It is possible that some of the illustrations in the archive were designated for the book "Lashon VaSefer" edited by Ya'akov Fichman, first published by "Achisefer" in Warsaw in 1923, where it was reprinted as a revised edition in 1941.
About 60 items in this archive are ink sketches and final illustrations for children's books and about 65 are primary pencil or graphite sketches, or incomplete pencil and ink sketches. Some illustrations are signed; others are dated and on some appears an inscription indicating that they were done in Rome. Numerous sketches appear on the back of proof prints for the books "Four Billy Goats", "The Kitten Who Forgot How to Ask for Food", "The Miller, The Milleress and the Millstones", and other books.
Size and condition vary. Many of the items are in good to very good condition; a number of items are in fair condition, with tears, creases or stains.
Provenance: Collection of Ben Zion Kahana.
