Pocket knife, 14 Karat gold (marked), manufactured by I-XL George Wostenholm, Sheffield, England, [early 20th century].
Gold; steel.
Engraved on the handle is a figure of a woman wearing a winged helmet, with the words "I will" on her heart (the emblem of Chicago). On the other side of the handle appears the monogram "NS" (Nahum Sokolow) with a Star of David and the word "Zion"; on the bottom - an engraved date - April 1913.
During his many travels in Europe and North America Sokolow visited Chicago in April 1913. The visit was documented in a group photograph with Zionist activists, which appears in the book History of the Jews of Chicago by Hyman Louis Meites (Chicago, 1924), p. 329 (the photograph is wrongly dated 1912, see enclosed material).
Approx. 9.5 cm. Good condition. Scratches on handle. Knives are slightly rusted.
