Letter of Recommendation for the "Exalted Yeshiva Student" Rabbi Yisrael Dov Odesser – Handwritten by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook and rabbi Ya'akov Moshe Harlap – 1927
Rabbi Yisrael Dov Odesser (1886-1994), also known by his disciples as "Sabba" (Grandfather) was close to Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook and studied the doctrine of Reb Nachman of Breslov with him. He was a frequenter of the home of Rabbi Ya'akov Moshe Harlap, who was a leading disciple of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook. Once, Reb Yisrael Dov said that "Rabbi Kook knew what I had suffered!" referring to what he had suffered by his opponents due to his being a Breslov Hassid. The short letter before us indicates that in hard times, Reb Yisrael Dov turned to Rabbi Avraham Yitachak Ha'Cohen Koon and his disciple Rabbi Harlap to ask that they help him support his household.
The letter is addressed to the head of "Ha'Va'ad Ha'Kelali" Rabbi Zalman Soloveitchik. Rabbi Harlap recommends the "dear, exalted Yeshiva student Yisrael Dov Odesser of Tiberius, who needs help very much". He adds a rare and special expression: "This Mitzvah is endless!"
On the margins of the letter, Rabbi Kook added several handwritten words in support of the recommendation and his signature.
The date: the eve of Rosh Chodesh Kislev 1927.
An interesting, unique item. Of value to the history of the Breslov Hassidism in the Land of Israel.
Condition: Good.
