A Document for the Sale of Chametz from the Beit Din of Kovno and the Av Beit Din Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan - Signed by them Twice! - Extremely Rare!
A document for the sale of chametz from the community of Kovno, very long and full of details and conditions, made by the Kovno Beit Din led by the Av Beit Din Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor. Amongst other things is a description of all of the alchohol found at the time, and details of various types of food which were customarily eaten at the time. The sale is not of the chametz itself, it also includes the rooms in which the chametz is found and the animals who eat the chametz etc. There are also many more matters and conditions in great detail. The document, with all of its great detail and conditions is very long, and takes up three large pages, full of over 40 lines per page.
The details and the many conditions were written in order for both the house owners, the sellers; and the gentile who is purchasing to be fully aware of the details of the transaction. Gemirut HaDa'at is mentioned many times in the document itself.

The Beit Din of Kovno signed the document of sale twice, headed by two signatures of the Rabbi, the Rabbi of the entire Diaspora, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan.
Why did he and his Beit Din sign again?
On the first page, in two different places are corrections to the writing: in the first place the word "b'reshimot" originally appears. It is crossed out, and above the word is the corrected wording: "Kdshaymei Bei Tlata". Two lines late the word "b'reshimot" appears again, which is also crossed out and above it is the correction: "as above".
At the end of the document of sale the Dayanim commented that they made these two changes, and signed again on this comment.
This comment also teaches us about the great responsibility and caution of Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan and his Beit Din in conducting the sale of chametz.
Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor of Kovno (1817-1896), the leader of the generation, the Posek of Jewish law in the entire Torah. The leaders of his generation referred to him as "Raban Shel Kol Bnei HaGolah (The Leader of all of the members of the Diaspora)". One of the first to encourage settling the Land of Israel. He established the sale of land in the Shemittah year so that the new settlement in Israel, whose members were mainly farmers, should not collapse. He established the first Kollel for married men in the world in Kovno, which is the basis for the thousands of Kollelim which have come after it until the present day, and through which Torah is not forgotten from the Jewish people.

Two signatures from Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan in one document! A long document with expansive halachic content! Extremely rare!
Condition: Good.
