Silver Medal with Tetragrammaton - Martin Luther, 1717
Silver medal, seemingly struck to commemorate 200 years since the Protestant Reformation. [1717].
Obverse: portrait of Martin Luther, surrounded by the legend "MartInVs LVutherVs theoLogIae DoCtor" (the enlarged letters spell the year 1717 in Roman numerals). Beneath is the legend "Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum" [Latin - the word of the Lord endures forever]. Reverse: a figure kneeling at an altar on which there is an open book; above there is a sun containing the Tetragrammaton. The picture is surrounded by the verse "Si Non Dixerint Iuxta Verbum Hoc Non Erit Eis Matutina Lux" [Latin - If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn. Isaiah 8:20]. Beneath is the legend "In memor. Iubil Sec. Luther" [in memory of Luther’s Jubilee].
