Lechem Shamayim. Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Levin. Berlin, 1834, with the Rare Pictur

Pirkei Avot with the Lechem Shamayim commentary of the Yaavetz and Chiddushei HaGahot by Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch [Levin, Berlin] with a picture of the rabbi. Berlin, 1834.

Specifications: Portrait, [3], 65 leaves, about 20 cm.

Background: Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin wrote his critique of the Lechem Shamayim to his uncle the Yaavetz, with his own novellae, however he did not print them. Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin - Levin 1721-1800 was a grandson of the Chacham Tzvi and a nephew of Yaavetz, he was the rabbi of Berlin and a prominent rabbi of Ashkenaz in his time. The editors of the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book write that the paper and font indicate that this work was not printed in Berlin, but in a different place at a later time.

Unique Features: Frontispiece portrait of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Berlin. The printer writes: "I placed a portrait, an engraved plate by an artist, at the front of the book." Some known copies are missing this picture, such as the copy in the National Library. This copy includes the picture with protective tissue paper.
