Mishna Berurah – the Personal Copy of the Author, the Chafetz Chaim, with His Handwritten Signature – with Instructions Regarding the Printing of the Book Handwritten by His Son Rabbi Leib Ha'Cohen Av Beit Din of Radin, who Took Part in Writing the 'Mishna Berurah' – a Most Important Item!
Before us is a special, touching and holy item: on the inner binding of the book appears the signature of the Greatest Posek of our times, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Ha'Cohen of Radin, author of the 'Chafetz Chaim'!
Originally, the book that was bound here was one of the first editions of his book the 'Mishna Berurah'. Thus, before us is the binding of the book 'Mishna Berurah', the personal copy of the author, who held it in his holy hands and used it for his study!
Since it was the author's personal copy, according to which the next (and subsequent) edition of the book was printed, on the inner binding, under his signature, we can find long, interesting inscriptions regarding corrections to be made in subsequent editions handwritten by his eldest son, who assisted him in printing his books including the 'Mishna Berurah', Rabbi Aryeh Leib Ha'Cohen. It is common knowledge that he wrote several Simanim of the Mishna Bererah together with his father!
Rabbi Aryeh Leib Ha'Cohen (1861-1939) was the eldest son, the disciple and the right-hand person of the Chafezt Chaim and who assisted him in writing and distributing his books.
After his father's death he moved to Radin to support the Radin Yeshiva. In his final years, he served as the Rabbi of Radin. He died in 1939 and was buried beside his father the Chafetz Chaim in the cemetery of Radin.
(For a full description of the journey the book has made from Radin to the Land of Israel, please see Hebrew description)
As stated, before us is the original binding of the 'Mishna Berurah' – the author's copy, which binds the book 'Chafetz Chaim'. At the beginning of 'Hilchot Issur lashon Ha'Rah' appears an ownership inscription of Rabbi Chaim Ze'ev Karlenstein, Av Beit Din of Kolisch.
