Sefer Noda Bi'Yehuda – A Copy Given by the Author Rabbi Yechezkel Landau to His Disciple Rabbi Shimon Oppenheim Rosh Av Beit Din of Budapest – Long, Important Glosses handwritten by Him
Sefer Noda Bi'Yehuda, Prague 1776. Firs edition which was printed in the lifetime of the author, Rabbi Yechezkel Landau.
This volume contains two sections: Yoreh De'ah and Even Ha'Ezer, with separate title pages.
On the lower part of the title page, there is a handwritten dedication, slightly cut: "Given as a gift by the author to … --- Shimon [Kromnoy] ---"
On the title page of the book, a stamp: "Of Kromnoy". On the upper part of the title page, an inscription that had been cut due to the binding: "The day of Sabbath Eve 15 Menachem --- 1789".
Throughout the leaves of the book there are dozens of long scholarly glosses which were handwritten by Rabbi Shimon Oppenheim of Kromnoy.
Description of the glosses
In one of the glosses, Rabbi Oppenheim writes: "in my novellae … I sat…". on leaf 25, he notes: "The first question asked by my teacher and rabbi is a question by the Maharsha…". On leaf 35, above his gloss, he wrote: "Gloss by the author disciple ---".
On leaf 41: "… so I have said in my novellae…".
On leaf 51, a long gloss in ancient script, apparently by a different writer.
On leaf 60: "The son-in-law of the genius rabbi has asked me … and I have replied…"
On leaf 79 a word that was missing from the printed text had been added [by the author himself?].
Some of the glosses are cut off or slightly faded. One gloss was erased with pencil, most likely by the writer himself, and under it he wrote another conclusion.
Stamp of Rabbi Yosef Pearls Av Beit Din of Munich at the beginning of the book. On one of the leaves, there is a scholarly gloss, most likely handwritten by one of the rabbis of the Pearls family.
Rabbi Shimon Oppenheim (1753-1851) a well-known genius. He studied with Rabbi Binyamin Wolf Boskowitz. He was a leading disciple eof the Noda Bi'Yehuda and was chosen by him to teach his grandson – Rabbi Yosef Landau (who was born in 1814).
Rabbi Shimon served as Dayan and Moreh Tzeddek in Kitsee and later as Rosh Av Beit Din of Pest, a position he held since 1820 for more than fifty years. He authored several books, among them: "Nezer Ha'Kodesh", "Har Ha'Kedem" and "Amud Ha'Shachar".
