Alim LiTerufah, letters to awaken a person to the service of the Creator, by Rabbi Natan Sternhartz – Moharnat of Breslov. Berdychiv, 1896. First edition.
This is the first edition of a foundational and highly important work in Breslov Chassidut. The book includes 380 letters by Rabbi Natan of Breslov. Some of these letters had previously been published in Mikhtavei Moharnat (Jerusalem, 1893).
The holy Rabbi Natan Sternhartz of Breslov [“Moharnat”; 1780–1844] was the foremost disciple of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and the de facto leader of the Breslov movement after his teacher’s passing.
According to Breslov tradition, in 1802, Rabbi Nachman said to his disciple, the kabbalist Rabbi Yudel of Dashiv: “I foresee a soul in Ukraine, a new, pure and refined soul that has never before descended into this lowly world”—referring to Moharnat, who soon arrived in Breslov. Upon entering to greet Rabbi Nachman, the latter said to him: “We have known each other for a long time, but it has been a while since we last met.” At that moment, Moharnat resolved deeply within: “Here I shall dwell, for I desire it.” And Rabbi Nachman responded: “From now on, I am no longer alone.”
Moharnat authored most of the Breslov texts from both his teacher’s and his own teachings: Likutei Halachot—Kabbalah and Halachah; Likutei Tefilot based on Likutei Moharan; Likutei Etzot; Alim LiTerufah, and more.
