Letter to the Admor of Rachmastrivka Regarding an Expulsion Decree from Sanzhary [Early 20th Century]

"To arouse pity from the Source of compassion for the residents of Stari Sanzhary ... near Poltava ... that the gubernator of Poltava, currently an evil, G-dless man, issued a decree to expel all the Jews from Stari Sanzhary ... and it is appropriate for his holiness to pray at the graves of the righteous people in the Land of Israel to beg for this ... regarding the expulsion of the Jews, that Hash-m should give them compassion and charity before the ministers in Petersburg and this is a great mitzvah, just like redeeming captives." Sanzhary, early 20th century.

Specifications: [1] paper, 21x26 cm. Handwritten letter by residents of Stari Sanzhary, written to the Admor, requests for children and good health. The lot includes a transcript of the letter.

Content: Two non-Jewish brothers wanted to rid themselves of their Jewish competitors. They worked to procure an edict expelling the Jews of Sanzhary, near Poltava [Ukraine]. The decree was issued by the provincial governor. In order to nullify the decree, two Jewish representatives were sent to meet with government officials in Kiev. From Kiev they were sent to Petersburg to ask a minister to involve himself in this issue. The son of the Admor of Rachmastrivka, Rabbi Moshe, arrived in Sanzhary at the time and suggested that they send a request to his father. In this letter, the residents of Sanzhary ask the Admor to pray at the graves of the righteous people in Land of Israel for the success of the representatives in Petersburg and for the death of the evil people who instigated the expulsion decree.

Background: Rabbi Mordechai [Mottelle] Twersky was born in 1840. His father was Admor Yochanan of Rachmastrivka, who was the son of the "Maggid of Chernobyl." In his second marriage, he was the son-in-law of the Admor David of Tolna. He attracted many followers, even while his father was still alive. In [1906], he moved to the Land of Israel and settled in Jerusalem. He was the first Admor of the Chernobyl dynasty to settle in the Holy Land. Many chassidim streamed to his court in Jerusalem. He was injured in the riots of 1920 on his return from the Western Wall and died from his wounds.

Condition: Moderate-fine condition. Fold marks, small tears along the fold line that slightly blemish the text, minimal stains.
