17th Century. Yosef Da'as. Prague, [1609]. First edition.

Sefer Yosef Da'as. Precise texts of Rashi's commentary on the Torah according to old manuscripts and prints, and elucidations on Rashi's commentary by Rav Yosef b"r Yissacher Miklish of Prague.

  • The author toiled and labored to correct mistakes in Rashi's commentary on the Torah, using antiquated printed editions of the Chumash and a 14th century parchment manuscript from Lublin.
  • The text is accompanied with artistic sketches demonstrating Rashi's words. Some sketches on entire pages.
  • Includes elucidations and comments on the gematrias of the Baal HaTurim on the Torah.
  • Guidelines for understanding Rashi's approach are printed at the end of the introduction. These guidelines were reprinted in many Chumashim.
  • Owner notation on the back of the title page.
The author Rav Yosef b"r Yissacher Miklish of Prague (1580-1654) was a close talmid of the Gaonim of Prague; the Maharal of Prague, the Levush and the Kli Yakar. Remark at the start of the sefer that it was printed with the approval of the author's rabbanim, the Maharal and the Kli Yakar. The author quotes and mentions his rabbanim in his commentary.
