17th century. Sefer HaIkrim with the Eitz Shatul commentary. Venice, [1618]

Sefer HaIkrim, tenets of faith and Emunah by Rav Yosef Albo, with the Etz Shatul elucidation by Rav Gedalya Lipshitz.

  • Etz Shatul is the primary, fundamental elucidation on Sefer HaIkrim.
  • Very important approbations, including from: Maharsha, Maharam of Lublin, the Shla and Kli Yakar.
  • Signature on the title page of Etz Shatul, in an Italian hand: שלמה בכמ"ר אליה בן פורת יצ"ו.
The author of Sefer HaIkrim, Rav Yosef Albo (c. 1380–1444) was a Spanish sage, a talmid of Rav Chasdai Crescas, author of Ohr Hashem (talmid of the Ran). Rav Albo organized his Ikrim under three categories: Existence of Hashem; Torah from Above; and reward and punishment (in contrast to the Rambam's 13 Ikrim).
The author wrote this work to strengthen the Emunah of the many Jews who were forced to convert during the pogroms of 1391.

Rav Gedalya Lipschitz, author of Etz Shatul, was a relative and disciple of the Maharam of Lublin. In Venice he supervised the printing of Chidushei Maharam of Lublin on the Talmud and his own teshuvos. He moved to Eretz Yisrael and was sent on fundraising missions by Chachmei Yerushalayim. (Refer to Shluchei Eretz Yisrael, p. 268).
