20 mark banknote - Lodz ghetto year 1940
The Jewish money printed in the ghetto became a single legal tender from 7/8/1940 and was derisively called "Rumaki" or "Chaimki" by the residents, after Mordechai - Chaim Rumkowski. By printing the "Jewish money", which was completely worthless outside the ghetto, the Germans intended to absorb the German money that the Jews had and they were obliged to convert any foreign money they had into the money printed in the ghetto. Possession of foreign money was a serious offense against the law and those caught violating it were severely punished.
