Series: Notes of the Imperial Russian Geographical society on the Department of Ethnography. Volume XVIII.

[Semyon Vikentievich Pakhman (1825-1910)-Russian civil lawyer, Senator, distinguished Professor, privy Councilor.

From 1867 he read civil law at the Alexander Lyceum. He also taught at the school of law, where he was an ordinary Professor and a member of the Council.

In November 1868, he was promoted to full state councillors; from April 17, 1878, to privy councillor.

In 1879, for his essay "Ordinary civil law in Russia" (2 volumes: 1877 and 1879), he was awarded the full count Speransky prize.

S. V. Pakhman was one of the founders of the St. Petersburg law society and from the time of its establishment in 1877 until 1893 was continuously elected as the Chairman's associate.

In June 1882, he was appointed a Senator; for some time he worked in the Commission on the drafting of the Russian civil code.

Five universities presented S. V. Pakhman with diplomas for the title of honorary member: St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kharkiv, St. Vladimir in Kiev and Novorossiysk.

A consistent and convinced representative of formal-logical dogmatic jurisprudence, Pachman, while recognizing the legitimacy of the existence of a philosophical theory of law alongside the dogma of law, denies the possibility of reducing dogma to the degree of art that exists in the interests of applying law, and subordinating the conclusions of dogma to the sources of positive law. Dogma of law is an independent scientific branch: its task is to study the General formal and logical structure of legal institutions, regardless of their everyday content. According to Pachman, the historical changes in institutions are not so significant that it is necessary to abandon some system of permanent universal foundations of civil law, arising from the concept of human personality and the fundamental properties of human nature, for example, egoistic feelings. The theoretical views of S. V. Pakhman were subjected to a serious scientific assessment in the study of S. A. Muromtsev "What is the dogma of law?".
