בליידן נחשב לאבי הפאן-אפריקניזם. כאשר נדחה ממכללה תיאולוגית בארצות הברית בגלל גזעו היגר לליבריה, שם שימש בסופו של דבר כמזכיר המדינה בין השנים 1864-66. בין השנים 1871 ל-1873 התגורר בלידן בפריטאון, סיירה לאון, שם ערך את *כושי*, כתב העת הפאן-אפריקאי הראשון במפורש במערב אפריקה. הוא גם הוביל שתי משלחות חשובות לפואטה דג'לון בפנים הארץ. בשנת 1885 הוא היה מועמד לא מוצלח לנשיאות ליבריה. מאוחר יותר הוא היה שגריר ליבריה בבריטניה ובצרפת, ועדיין שימש מאוחר יותר כנשיא מכללת ליבריה.
בהקדמה אומר בלידן: "העמודים הבאים מכילים רק תיעוד של התקריות היומיומיות וההתרשמות של מסע מליבריה לארץ הקודש, שהועתקו מיומן השמור באופן קבוע לידיעת החברים בבית. את המסע הזה ערכתי לבדי ואני סומך על כך שמי שיש לו את הסקרנות לעקוב אחר אפריקאי בשיטוטיו בארצות קדושות, יוכל להשתתף, במידה מסוימת, בהנאה וברווח שהסיור שלי העניק לי...".
