Rabbi Aryeh Levin - Photographs from the burial ceremony of David Raziel on Mount Herzl

Six photographs from the military funeral held by Irgun commander David Raziel on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, in which the righteous Rabbi Aryeh Levin seen. March 16, 1961.

In 1941, Irgun commander David Raziel responded to the British request to dispatch a commando unit to sabotage the oil refining facilities near Baghdad, which had been essential to the German army. In this action Raziel was killed on May 20 together with a British officer by direct bomb from a German airplane And he is 30 years old. Raziel was buried by the British in Iraq in a military cemetery. His family and the Foreign Ministry made great efforts to bring his coffin to Israel, but only in 1955 the Iraqi government agree to allow the British to remove the coffin from their country, provided that it was not buried in Israel but in Cyprus, then a British colony. In September 1960, shortly after Cyprus gained independence, MK Menachem Begin appealed to the President of the New Republic, Archbishop Makarios III, to allow the transfer of the coffin to the State of Israel. On March 16, 1961, a military funeral took place at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem with the participation of the masses. The day of his death, 23 Iyar, was determined by Menachem Begin in 1946 as a day of reunion with all fallen Irgun.
