Katamon Conquest Special Medal 1.5.48
In the War of Independence the Katamon neighbourhood stood between the Jewish neighbourhoods of the city's south and the Arab neighbourhood on the other, under fire and unrest.
The Hagana was tasked with conquering the San Simon Monastery looking over the Katamon neighbourhood from west.
The Hagana break-in battalion of the Harel Brigade charged and was met with repeating counter-attacks. After relentless attrition fighting the break-in battalion finally succeeded in pushing-off the attackers and conquered the monastery. On one side of the medal The Tower of David and the House of National Institutions. Carries the Hebrew inscription "If I shall forget you, Jerusalem, so forgotten shall be my right",
and on its other side the inscription "for the conquest of Katamon, Jerusalem, 1.5.1948".
