Jewish Jerusalmite – Plaster Sculpture, 20th Century. Unidentified Artist
Plaster sculpture with impressive stones, an image of a Jew with skullcap and beard. Signed ד.ר. – unidentified artist (Bezalel). 41X16X17 cm. Chips, fissures and stains. Overall fine condition. The sculpture is from the estate of Eliezer Shtrich (1879, Dvinsk – February 1941, Haifa) a Latvian born, Eretz Israel sculptor. In 1914, he was invited to head Bezalel's sculpture department. After the country was conquered by the British, he enlisted in the Jewish Legion. After he was released, he returned to teaching in Bezalel. In 1923, he served as art teacher in the Reali School in Haifa and the Technion and served in these roles for 16 years.
