LOUIS XVI : (1754-1793) King of France and Navarre 1774-1791, King of the French 1791-92. The only King of France to have been executed. Unusual D.S., Louis, in his hand, a good and large signature example, one page, folio, Versailles, 19th August 1787, to the Duke of Orleans, in French. The King sends a request to his correspondent, asking him to take the necessary decisions and send orders to the police officers permitting them to maintain the order at the Royal Palace gardens, stating in part `…the increasing number of people issuing fake letters of exchange and other commerciable documents oblige us to take all kind of precautions in order to stop this disorder… It is at the privileged areas where the surveillance is requested… I expect that with your zeal and your devoted service to the State order, you will give precise orders to the Royal Palace Governor, and for as long as the circumstances will oblige..´ With a Royal paper seal affixed. Right and left edges very slightly trimmed with darker borders, bearing preventing plagues small tears to the letter borders. Accompanied by a L.S., one page, folio, Versailles, 20th August 1787, addressed by a Marshal to the Duke of Orleans, in French. The document states `I have the honour of sending to Y.S.H. a letter of the King which H.M. has instructed me to forward to you. I would have liked to have the honour of delivering it to your Y.S.H. in person but the circumstances hold me in Versailles..´ With a Pro Patria watermark and blank integral leaf. G, 2 £1500-2000 Louis Philippe II (1747-1793) Duke of Orleans 1785-93. Son of Louis Philippe d´Orleans and cousin of King Louis XVI. Guillotined. He was Premier Prince du sang (Prince of the Blood closest to the throne after Sons and Grandsons of France). During the French Revolution he changed his name to Philippe Egalité. One of the wealthiest men in France who actively supported the Revolution of 1789 and advocated for the suppression of the absolute monarchy. Louis Philippe II voted for the death of King Louis XVI, his correspondent in the present letter. Louis Philippe II was guillotined in 1793 during the Reign of Terror. His son Louis Philippe d´Orleans became King of the French from 1830 to 1848.
