Félix Bonfils [1831-1885] was a French photographer who was active 1867-1878. The Land of Israel and its sites were a focal interest of his. Bonfils is considered the most important figure in the history of photography in the Levant of the 19th century. His photographs are characterized by rare quality and he is recognized as a person who has made an unprecedented contribution to the history of photography in the Middle East. Félix Bonfils was perhaps the greatest photographer of 19th century Land of Israel, and was undoubtedly the most well-known and productive among them. When an expert on the history of photography was asked about him, he could only say, "All that we know about Bonfils, was that he was a genius."
Bonfils's photographs are characterized by depictions of architecture, landscapes and the depiction of figures of "from the East" in an Oriental style.
